Motherhood: an Eternal Partnership with Him

“'I know deep down inside I am doing God’s work. I know that my motherhood is an eternal partnership with Him. '

“Mothers, cherish that role that is so uniquely yours and for which heaven itself sends angels to watch over you and your little ones. Yours is the work of salvation, and therefore you will be magnified, compensated, made more than you are, better than you are, better than you’ve ever been.

He is blessing you & He will bless you. Rely on Him, rely on Him heavily. Rely on Him forever. And press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope.”

-Elder Jeffrey R. Holland

I felt the truthfulness & power of Elder Holland's words as I listened to them, and then as the tears began to well in my eyes. I feel so grateful to my Father in Heaven for the blessing He has given me to watch over & nurture His sweet child. I am eternally grateful.

Stace's Cakes Through the Years

Well, it all started with this one:
And this one, too:
(But I didn't make either of these two!)
Stace's 23rd birthday, his first birthday as a married man, brought him a cake reminiscent of the tropical islands he served his mission on:
As his 24th birthday approached, I wondered how in the world I could top the cake theme I had used the year before?
The only thing I could think of was a cake modeled after his favorite food!

The next month's fourth of July brought a light and fresh alternative to the traditional lard-filled cakes I usually bake. This is an angel-food cake with whipped cream topping and strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. A Kim original! HA! just kidding! I think everyone makes this cake! And it's a good one!
Stace LOVES a good cookie cake, so for Valentine's Day 2009 I whipped one up using my favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe and some homemade icing dyed lots of fun colors!
A few months later when Stace graduated with his undergrad degree, and as we were about to head off to the Swamp, I threw him a surprise party and made two cakes (an FSU cake and a UF cake) to celebrate!
FSU cake was two layers of yellow cake with one chocolate cake layer in between and chocolate frosting, and the Gator cake was red velvet with cream cheese frosting, of course! :D (that recipe had to be tripled to fill the size of the cake pan!)

Last year on his birthday I was a
major failure and didn't do a fun cake:*( I remember being so disappointed I had skipped the tradition for a year. But...I had just made the above two cakes the month before his birthday, PLUS...please give me credit because Pregnant Kim went to his favorite place, Sonny's, which I really hated at the time (since then I have come to learn that I do, in fact, like their pulled chicken...but that is neither here nor there.)

Well, this year my attempt at a fun cake was brought back! But this time, it was not one cake, but 12 mini cakes! Or...cupcakes! I made a cupcake cake! White cake and chocolate icing from scratch, piped to quite-far-from-perfection, sprinkled with toffee bits and what?! you thought those were maraschino cherries? Gotchya! They are just red M&M's, silly!

I love you Mr. Twenty-Six-Year-Old-Head!

Happy Birthday Love!

One of my two CRAZY boys has a birthday today!
I'll give you a hint: he's a little bit bigger than the other one...
but choosing the sillier one would be a tough call, so, sorry....no hints there...
Let the birthday playing begin!

Happy 26th birthday to my beautiful husband.

We love you.
PS: please never forget Perkins tonight. First sign we should have walked out as soon as we walked in: the smell of wet dog. Second sign: empty house except for a few super duper oldie-goldies. Third sign: that waitress. Wait. Strike that. She was the best part of the night. Fourth sign: me spilling Jessica's Coke trying to get a picture of Boo Boo on my phone to send to his Grandmommy. Fifth sign: nothing mildly appealing on the menu. Sixth sign: Jessica almost choked to death. Seventh sign: Boo Boo was tired. Eighth sign: we were all wondering the whole time why we were even there in the first place. Ninth sign: they don't even do anything special for birthdays. LAME. Tenth sign: the creepy guy sitting behind you, facing me. Eleventh sign: everyone was staring at us. Twelfth sign: it was just awkwardly too quiet. I could go on and on. And PSS for my bloggy friends: we had planned to go somewhere downtown that I had a gotten a coupon for at Restaurants.com. We got all the way there and lugged Boo Boo ten miles to the front door, only to find it was no longer in business. So then we were going to one of Stace's favorite places, Boston Market. But right before we got there Stace decided to turn into Perkins instead. We joked as soon as we sat down about just getting up and leaving. Why we didn't do just that, we're not sure. As we left the restaurant Stace said: "well, that was an experience! Probably will never go back to Perkins again!"

Julian's Newest Friend: TJ!

On June 6, 2010, Julian's newest little friend/ cousin arrived! His name is Trent Jr., or TJ. TJ is so sweet and is just as cute as can be! His mommy and daddy are our good friends Amelia & Trent. Amelia also happens to be Stace's cousin. We are so glad we have them here in Gainesville with us.

Do you love how beautiful Amelia looks right after giving birth? Hm...I'm pretty sure...no, make that I am positive I was so swollen I looked like I was embalmed. :/

Here is Julian scoping out his new friend and trying to figure him out! It was so cute!

Julian and his chubby little thighs trying to play with Baby TJ!

Ready for more? Yes please! :D

Here we are tonight (June 25) visiting Amelia and Baby TJ. They were matchey-matchey in their little Polo rompers:)
We are so excited to watch these two grow up together!

Even after much contemplation & effort...

Do you ever have days where you just feel like this?
Yeah, me too.

And you try to look forward to the beautiful hope of tomorrow...

...but you're not really sure how to get passed today?

Today has been one of those days.

On days like today, it's good to pause and reflect on what is truly most important in life.
I am so blessed.

A Brief History of Us on Father's Day

April 28, 2004:
I can still remember watching the back of him get smaller and smaller as he walked further and further away from me. He walked out of my life for two years as he answered the call to serve a full-time mission for our church. As I watched him take each of the steps up to that little plane, I felt my heart fall out of my chest, drop to the ground, and shatter. After two years of being the best of friends, I would not even see him for two years. I would hear his voice just twice a year. I would go for long periods of time without getting a letter from him. My best friend. That image of him walking away seemed to physically hurt me inside.

At the same time, I was thrilled for him. What an amazing blessing it would be to give one's whole self to the Lord for two years. His mind would be consumed each day with doing the Lord's work, and with nothing else. What a growing experience. What an opportunity.

He needed to go for the Lord.
He needed to go for himself.
I needed him to go if he was to be the man I would marry.
I needed him to go for myself.

Yes, watching him leave that day was so, so difficult. But I would not trade that time that we had apart from each other for anything in the world. And I know Stace wouldn't either. His mission experience was so special and so life-changing for him. It was his time to "grow up unto the Lord."

It was my time to grow up unto him, too.

Sweet, quiet Stace went to Venezuela and also to the isles of the sea and learned two languages fluently and he, yes Stace, spoke them with boldness as he declared the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He made eternal friendships and was an instrument in the Lord's hands in helping families find the way to eternity with one another.
He blessed the lives of so many in the Lord's way, and in Stace's own special, humble way. I had an opportunity to go back and visit many of the people Stace taught and baptized in Aruba one year after we were married, and saw the tears in their eyes as they expressed their gratitude for "Elder Sirmans" and for the fact that he loved them, cared for them, and never gave up on them.

The Lord qualifies whom He calls.

And though he had a girl waiting for him at home,

and that was his only focus.

We hoped we would end up together in the end-- Stace somehow knew that we would and just left it at that. But for those two years, he had a higher purpose. He had an excellent attitude towards our relationship...one that allowed him to fully focus on his mission: if I were to find someone else, then that would be difficult of course, but it would be ok. If there was someone else the Lord would place in my life, Stace had full confidence in the Lord that he would place someone else in his life, as well. And that was that.

I too, grew a great deal during our time apart. What a great blessing it was to have that time to grow & mature spiritually, mentally & emotionally on my own. I needed that time. Yes, I experienced the world and was able to travel all over. But, more importantly, I learned more than I had ever known before how special I am to my Father in Heaven, and how much He loves each and every one of His children. I developed a stronger relationship with my Savior, and I learned so much from Their words. It was an irreplaceable period of my life, and I am so grateful I had it.

May 4, 2006:
The day I would see Stace again. I was so nervous. He would not like me. The chemistry would be gone. He would be scared of girls in general. He would think I was fat. Two years of not dating a single soul and locking up my whole heart would have been for naught. I was shaking...almost uncontrollably.

Then, he walked through the doors. He was beautiful. His big smile showed his teeth which were magnificently white!
The stake president soon released him as a full-time missionary for the church and we had our first hug in over two years!
Our friends Katie and John drove us to the apartment I shared with Katie and a couple other wonderful friends so I could get a few things before heading back to Stace's parents where we would all be together to catch up with this person who was loved and missed by so many.

We got in the backseat of Katie's car; I behind Katie in the driver's seat and Stace behind John's passenger seat. We put our seat belts on. Before Katie could even finish pulling out, Stace was unbuckling his seatbelt to scoot closer to me and put his arm around my shoulder. No way!

We hugged that night in my room...it was exactly the same feeling! Nothing had changed! Our feelings were the same, except even stronger. We both just knew. We talked under the stars (sounds corny, but true!) for hours at his parents' house that night. We knew we would soon be married. It was perfect. Definitely one of the best nights of my entire life.

(Stace after giving his mission report to the High Council)

We were sealed on July 22, 2006 in the Orlando, Florida temple.
Perhaps this post would have been more fitting for our four year anniversary which is coming up in just over a month. But, inspired by the blog of my sweet friend Christina, I wanted to write something now, and something special for Father's Day.

Stace and I welcomed our first child into the world on December 2, 2009. It was an amazing experience to bring our son into the world, hand-in-hand.
And what a blessing this sweet child has been in our lives, and in the lives of our family members.

Stace is truly a wonderful daddy to Julian. It is so funny, and so true, that whenever Julian wants to laugh he looks to Stace for his entertainment! It is so dang cute. They always have so much fun together!
Stace loves him so much, and has been hooked since he first laid eyes on him. He is so good at calming Julian, at snuggling Julian, at playing with Julian. I already see it in Julian's eyes when he looks at Stace how much he loves his daddy. I have a feeling he will want to grow up and be just like him.
And I am so okay with that.
Happy Father's Day to the love of my forever.
You are my favorite!

ROUTINE

The baby books I have read say that babies really can't get on a structured routine earlier than four months old because their brains are just not yet mature enough/ wired to get into/ become familiar with a particular routine. Well, he is now six months old and up until about a week ago, I didn't have him on a bedtime routine. A couple people have asked me "oh, what is his bedtime?" and inside I have felt squeamish because...well, he hasn't yet really had a SET bedtime nor bedtime routine. He just generally has fallen asleep between 8:30 and 9:30. But not having a set bedtime routine was never really an issue; he is an easy baby and will go down just fine without a SET routine. And it's been a good thing since he has been such a world (ok, state) traveler since he was born! (But I think that has been part of my intimidation with the words "bedtime routine"...it's hard to even fathom a routine when it feels like you're seldom in the same place!)
Well, goodbye intimidation!
YES! I finally have him on a structured bedtime routine...holler! It only took about one week to get him into this for any moms out there who have felt like I did when it came to the words "bedtime routine." I'm glad we have that routine now. I think it's best for all of us. :)

Edelweiss

Just a month or so ago, my little sister and I were driving around with Julian and he became tired and was ready for a nap. He usually falls right to sleep in the car, but on this particular day he was a fussy kind of tired. We sang him a few lines from a few different lullabies, but nothing seemed to soothe him. Then, my little sister started singing "Edelweiss" ("A-dill-vice" from "The Sound of Music") and he immediately calmed down. It was amazing! I was stunned for two reasons:

1. that he immediately just stopped and listened when she started singing that particular song.
2. That that song had completely slipped my mind each and every time I went through my mental repertoire of lullabies for almost five months...I couldn't believe I had forgotten "Edelweiss"...my mom used to sing it to us all the time, and I loved it

I have noticed a trend since that day. Every single time he is fussy, I think save one time, he has calmed down when I sing him that song. But the even cooler thing is, not only does he calm down, he smiles really big. He's a really smiley baby in general, but I can't say that I have noticed him smiling SO big when I sing any other lullaby. It's just so neat. It just fills my heart to see that big smile he has.

Tonight as I was getting ready to put him in his crib for bedtime, he seemed to just be wide awake --doin' a little bit of the step, step, step and all-- (though I knew he wasn't). I started to sing Edelweiss, and his face just lit up, and he got that signature "Capital D" smile on his face (as his Aunt Candace likes to call it) and then calmed down. I put him down. When I left the room and closed the door he started to cry. Within a minute or so he was out.
I love Edelweiss.

Quotes that I Love, Part 2

"Virtue, and genuine graces, in themselves speak what
no words can utter."
-William Shakespeare

"Have a time and place for everything, and do everything in its time and place, and you will not only accomplish more, but have far more leisure than those who are always hurrying." - Tyron Edwards

(after moving last month & now that I have more space again, I am finally feeling like my home is organized & clean the way I like it to be, and I know the truthfulness of this quote again! ahhh...all is right with the world again;) This morning I thought to myself:
"there is something so empowering about having all of the laundry clean, hung/ folded and in it's rightful place."
Is that silly?

Here is an idea I read in Parents Magazine today that I thought was really interesting/ cool. It was in an article about raising a self-confident, independent, and resilient child:
"When kids worry about the dark or monsters, it's because their cognitive skills aren't developed enough to reason things out. But you can take advantage of their vivid imaginations to help them overcome their fears. Ask a preschooler or older kid 'What color are your scary feelings?' and 'What color are your brave feelings?' Then tell your child that whenever he feels scared, he can breathe in and fill his whole body with the brave color. The visualized color acts as a shield against fear, plus deep breathing reduces stress & releases serotonin, a feel-confident brain chemical." -Dr. Charlotte Reznick, UCLA.

"And they arose from the earth, and he said unto them: Blessed are ye because of your faith. And now behold, my joy is full. And when he had said these words, he wept, and the multitude bare record of it, and he took their little children, one by one, and blessed them, and prayed unto the Father for them. And when he had done this he wept again; And he spake unto the multitude, and said unto them:
Behold your little ones."

"Joy in looking and comprehending is nature's most beautiful gift."
